UPSC Implements Stricter Photo Guidelines to Combat AI-Driven Frauds

 In a bid to tackle the increasing instances of fraud and impersonation, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has rolled out stringent rules regarding the submission of photographs in the application process for the UPSC CSE Prelims 2024. As per the new regulations, candidates are required to upload photographs that are not older than 10 days from the commencement of the online application process, effectively mandating fresh photographs for each application.

The decision comes in the wake of rising concerns over the misuse of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), to manipulate photographs and documents for fraudulent purposes. Retired senior IAS officer JK Dadoo emphasized the necessity of such measures, citing the ease with which AI can morph images, leading to identity-related challenges during examinations. By enforcing this rule, UPSC aims to mitigate the risks associated with identity fraud and maintain the integrity of the examination process.

While some aspirants have expressed concerns regarding the inconvenience and potential financial burden of obtaining new photographs, experts argue that the long-term benefits outweigh the immediate challenges. Rajesh Kumar Pathak, secretary of the Technology Development Board, lauded the initiative for streamlining the verification process and ensuring consistency in candidate identification across different stages of the examination.

Under the new guidelines, candidates are required to adhere to specific criteria, including the clear mention of their name and the date of the photograph, along with occupying three-fourths of the space in the image. Moreover, candidates must maintain visual consistency in their appearance throughout the examination stages, matching the features depicted in their uploaded photographs.

The implementation of these stricter rules signifies UPSC's commitment to enhancing transparency and fairness in the selection process for civil services. Despite the initial adjustments required by candidates, the measures are expected to bolster the credibility of the examinations and safeguard against fraudulent practices.

As the registration process for UPSC CSE Prelims 2024 commences, candidates are urged to familiarize themselves with the updated guidelines and ensure compliance to avoid any discrepancies during the examination stages. With these measures in place, UPSC aims to uphold the integrity of the civil service recruitment process and promote a level playing field for aspirants across diverse backgrounds and regions.
